DETAILS
The Ruta de la Sal is a regatta that was born in 1989 to commemorate the blockade that Barcelona suffered during the Carlist Wars.
In May 1846, due to the blockade imposed on Barcelona by Carlist armies during the "Revolt of the Sailors," a salt shortage endangered the city.
A well-known Barcelona businessman had the original idea of challenging the most renowned sailors of the time: he would pay for transporting salt from the Pityusic Salt Flats to El Garraf (Barcelona), but based on the order of arrival. The first to arrive would be paid in gold, while the last might not even be able to pay their crew.
Thirteen boats accepted the challenge. The first to arrive was the “Maltese Falcon,” a 32-meter Baltimore schooner captained by the Greek Andreas Potrus, followed by the xebec “Jerba” and the brig “Arrogante.”
